Bourbon Salted Caramel Sauce is a sweet velvety sauce perfect for dessert cakes, cookies, pies, ice cream and just about anything else you can think of!
Move over chocolate fudge sauce, there is a new sheriff in town.
If you are looking for the perfect topping to … umm … ANYTHING, this is it. Ice cream, dessert hand pies, flip flops .. you name it, this Bourbon Salted Caramel Sauce takes everything to the next level.
I was doing a recipe for a holiday appetizer (coming soon!) and needed a quick caramel sauce to use as a topping. It seemed a bit ordinary, a bit ‘been there, done that’ so then I decided what better way to kick off the holiday season then throw some bourbon in that salted caramel sauce? I mean, how could you improve on a sauce that is already sweet and rich and tastes like smooth velvety goodness?
Again … Bourbon.
Now if you are not inclined to add in your recipes, please feel free just to leave the bourbon out. This recipe still makes the perfect salted caramel sauce with or without the bourbon. But if you are so inclined, add that little bit of bourbon into the sauce because, believe me, it makes for a delicious back note on this recipe.
I have made salted caramel sauces in the past, I even have a recipe for Pumpkin Monkey Bread with Salted Caramel Glaze but I have to say that this is my favorite sauce to date. It is smooth and beautiful and has just the perfect amount of salt without it being overpowering. Then pour in a splash of bourbon (I use Maker’s Mark) and it is the perfect holiday sauce for topping and dipping your favorite treats.
**Side note: This is always a lovely gift as the holidays approach :)**
So if you are craving a salty, sweet sauce to compliment your cakes, pies, ice cream sundaes.. etc… etc… etc… please give this recipe a try. You won’t be disappointed and you will find it is way better than any pre-made jar of topping you might find in your local grocery store.

- 2 cup sugar
- 12 tbl butter
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 tbl salt
- 1 tbl bourbon
Start by making your caramel sauce. In a small saucepan over medium high heat, add sugar and stir until sugar is melted. It may clump, just keep whisking and cook until it turns a light amber color.
Once sugar is melted, add in butter and whisk until melted. Stir in bourbon.
Remove from heat and add in cream and salt and whisk to incorporate. Set aside and let caramel cool. Once cooled, you can pour into air-tight container and store in the refrigerator.
