Grilled Flank Steak with Cherry Habanero BBQ Sauce is a tender steak grilled in a sweet and spicy sauce. Perfect for both busy weeknights and lazy weekends.
There are just some days when you need something more than yard bird!
Chicken is the go-to source of protein in this house but there are nights when you really just want to treat yourself to a steak. This Grilled Flank Steak with Cherry Habanero BBQ Sauce is the perfect way to get your non-chicken fix and because it is so quick and easy to cook, it is great for busy weeknights and lazy weekends alike.
For years (….and years), I have asked my husband to grill outside. I do not touch the grill, I don’t go near the grill, I don’t want anything to do with the grill but I always really wanted him to somehow wake up one day and grab up his trusty metal tongs and become The Great Grill Master.
This ….. never….. happened.
Up until just recently the answer has always been UMMM… NO! but now Big Scary Mike has turned a new leaf and he has found his stride when it comes to grilling and even happily makes me dinner most nights during the week. For a guy who has spent most of his life sitting in front of a computer, that guy has some serious skills when it comes to grilling. And please don’t think I don’t tell him 600 times a day about that so that he does not doubt his grilling greatness and returns once again the darkened cave that is his video game hideout. Haha!
So Mike has mastered chicken, he has advanced into vegetables and he has even gone so far to start his own MANLY Pinterest board to gather grilling ideas and instruction. It’s like I don’t even know who this guy is!
Then came the real test … steak. With a little trial and error, he has definitely figured out how to grill steak perfectly on his new best friend, Weber. I provided the idea and the BBQ sauce recipe and he brought my idea to LIFE (IT’S ALIVE!!!! … ALIVE!!!!!), making this Grilled Flank Steak with Cherry Habanero BBQ Sauce is my favorite barbecue offering yet.
Flank steak is quick and easy to cook, it really only takes 6 to 8 minutes a side, pair it off with some vegetables and maybe some rice or a side of pasta and you have the perfect dinner. The Cherry Habanero BBQ sauce is sweet and tangy with just a little bit of spice and it complements the grilled flank steak to the next level. But then again, Cherry Habanero BBQ Sauce would honestly be great on just about any flip flop in your house and I promise it will definitely do justice to chicken, burgers, ribs …. you name it!
So even though not everybody is in love with their grill ..#me .. this recipe is so worth it and you definitely want to give this one a try.
Happiness and Blessings!
- 2 lb flank steak
- 1/2 tbsp olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic diced
- 3/4 cup ketchup
- 1 habanero diced
- 1/8 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper powder
- 1/2 cup orange juice
- 1/ tsp onion powder
- 18 oz cherry preserves
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 tbl Worcestershire sauce
Start in a medium sized sauce pan, add olive oil and heat over medium heat
Add diced halapeno and saute for 2 minutes. Add in garlic and cook for another minute
Pour in ketchup, preserves, vinegar, soy sauce, orange juice and remaining spices
Bring to a low boil and then lower heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
Pour BBQ sauce through a small screen strainer to remove halapeno and garlic pieces (or don't if they don't bother you) and then allow sauce to come to room temperature.
Rinse and pat dry flank steak. Using a basting brush, lightly coat with BBQ sauce.
Prepare your grill... Once hot and coals are ash colored, place steak on grill rack coated with cooking spray; grill 7-8 minutes on each side or until desired degree of doneness (medium rare is 135 degrees). Coat with BBQ sauce as you flip your steak. Move steak to a cutting board, coat with sauce again and cover loosely with foil. Let stand 10 minutes. Cut steak diagonally across grain into thin slices.
