After doing much research on the phenomena that is the Christmas Crinkle Cookie and finding approximately 7000 recipes and just as many pictures, I figured they were going to be good but considering their ingredient list is pretty minimal, I really wasn’t expecting them to be GREAT.

There are some recipes that surprise you.  This Green Christmas Crinkle Cookies recipe is one of them.

WHY THESE GREEN CHRISTMAS CRINKLE COOKIES ARE THE BEST!

With Christmas and the holiday season right around the corner, I was looking for an easy green cookie recipe made with a store bought cake mix and a few simple ingredients that would be fun for kids to bring to school to celebrate the day.

Let me just say that this recipe makes 36 cookies… by nightfall there were 13 of them left in my house.

  • These Green Crinkle Cookies are made using just FIVE ingredients … six if you count the food coloring 🙂
  • Even though these are Christmas Crinkle Cookies, you can totally pass these off as green St. Patrick’s Day cookies too #multitasking
  • These are the softest, fluffiest cookies and adding almond extract makes these sweet treats irresistible
  • Cake mixes are often Buy One, Get One so if you make two boxes of cake mix cookies, technically no one knows how many cookies you ate while in the kitchen alone
  • Easy to make, super cute, crazy tasty … “Hostest with the Mostest” award goes to … (insert your name HERE) …

To make these Green Christmas Crinkle Cookies, you will need:

  • White box cake mix – this is the foundation of your crinkle cookies
  • Eggs – for moisture and stabilization
  • Butter – FLAVOR
  • Powdered sugar – your crinkle cookies can crack but they aren’t crinkles without the powdered sugar on top
  • Almond extract – MORE FLAVOR
  • Green gel food coloring – bright green color perfect for the Christmas holidays

HOW TO MAKE GREEN CRINKLE COOKIES

Start by preheating your oven to 375 degrees and spray your cookie sheet with non-stick spray or cover with a sheet of parchment paper.  In a large mixing bowl, combine melted butter with the cake mix, almond extract and eggs. When you have your ingredients combined, add in several drops of green food coloring and mix it in.

Green Christmas Crinkle Cookies batter

Refrigerate dough for at least 30 minutes. Once chilled, remove from refrigerator and spooning up enough dough to roll into a 1 inch ball. Drop the ball into the powdered sugar and roll it around to cover it completely.

Move your cookie to your prepared cookie sheet and repeat until all the dough has been used.

When your sheet is full, cook them for 10-11 minutes.  They will be puffy and crinkly and beautiful. Remove them from the oven, let them cool for one minute and then move them to a cooling rack.

PRO TIPS FOR PERFECT CHRISTMAS CRINKLE COOKIES

  • Don’t be shy with the food coloring .. once you think your crinkle cookies are green enough, add a bit more.  The cookies will lighten as they cook.
  • I prefer food coloring gel vs. liquid food coloring because it doesn’t compromise the consistency of the batter.
  • Don’t skip chilling the dough in the refrigerator. I brings the dough together and your cookies will be fluffier and hold their shape better if you chill the dough first.
  • You can flavor these Green Christmas Crinkle Cookies with any extract flavoring your like .. almond, vanilla, peppermint …
  • Using a small kitchen scoop is a great way to ensure you crinkles cookies are all the same size
  • If you want to kick up the Christmas dessert table presentation, re-drop your cookies top down in the powdered sugar one extra time right when they come out of the oven.

I love making cake mix cookies. I made red velvet cookies for Valentine’s. I’m going to have to mix up a batch of these green cookies for St Patty’s day. You’re right about the need to refrigerate the dough a bit. before rolling it into bowls. That chilling time makes it so much easier to handle.

I love crinkle cookies, but have never dyed them green for St. Patricks Day. How fun are these! My friend’s daughter is having a little St. Patrick’s Day party with her friends, and these would be a perfect treat for the kids!

I made red velvet cake mix cookies for Valentine’s day. These are perfect for St. Patty’s Day. You’re absolutely right about needing to put them in the fridge for a while. They’re too runny without that chilling time. I think I’m going to make some of these. I already have the gel food coloring I will need.

  6. These were great cookies. Just finished making these with 2 of my granddaughters (5 & 3 yrs. old). They loved making them and I have the powdered sugar covered floor to prove it. I can think of several variations I can make with this recipe, different flavored cake mixes, different colors, and sprinkles in the powdered sugar. Fun.

    1. I’m so glad!! Kids love watching the color change to something fun like green. Great way to spend the day and make some new memories. And yes, variations are endless.. I did a double chocolate peppermint one a few Christmas’ back that was out of this world!! Let me know what other combinations you come up with 🙂

  7. I haven’t bought a cake mix in decades but it’s sure tempting for these fun green cookies. My favorite-4-year-old would love these for her preschool class on St. Patrick’s Day. Thanks for the inspiration! 🙂

    1. These are perfect for kids!! I made a batch just using the cake mix as the cookie flavor and a batch with the almond extract. Both came out really good and I’m a sucker for thick, soft batch cookie so that’s why these cookies are my new favorite. Your 4-year old will love the color too 🙂
